Doctor of Philosophy Program in Language and Communication

This PhD program offers advanced interdisciplinary studies of language and communication, aiming to enhance and expand the body of knowledge in the fields, suitable for those who aim to exel in the theoretical and practical aspect of language and communication.

 Expected Learning Outcomes (ELOs)

  1. Be cognizant of and follow professional disciplines and ethics in order to serve as a role model for the next generation scholars.
  2. Understand and be competent in major theories in Language and Communication well enough to explicate discourses in various social and cultural aspects.
  3. Apply such theories to enhance the quality of Language and Communication performance, which will anticipatedly lead to sustainable development.
  4. Analyze and criticize theories and research tools which are selected and employed.
  5. Integrate the existing knowledge in Language and Communication to develop net knowledge.
  6. Generate scholarly works in Language and Communication of which the quality standards are internationally accepted to disseminate and publicize the newly developed knowledge.

Qualifications of Applicants

  1. Holder of a Master's Degree in Language and Communication, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Communication Studies, Applied Communication and other related fields from a university of institute accredited by the Commission of Higher Education (for applicants of PhD Program Track 1(1.1) and Track 2(2.1)).
  2. Holder of a Bachelor's Degree with honors in Language and Communication, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Communication Studies, Applied Communication and other related fields from a university or institute accredited by the Commission of Higher Education (for applicants of MA continuing to PhD program Track 2(2.2))
  3. Obtain a TOEFL score of no less than 550 (Paper-based) or 79-80 (Internet-based) or an IELTS of 6.0

Selection Criteria

  1. All applicants are required to submit a Statement of Purpose in English upon application and take an oral interview in English.
  2. Applicants wishing to select Track 1(1.1) are required to submit a complete dissertation proposal for approval upon application and take an oral interview in English.
  3. Applications of Track 1(1.1) must have excellent academic records. Considerations will be made based upon the applicant's scholastic records, research background, dissertation proposal and English language proficiency.
  4. Considerations for applicants of Track 2(2.1) and 2(2.2) will be made based upon the applicant's scholastic records, Statement of Purpose and English Language proficiency.

N.B. Non-Thai applicants who have residence outside Thailand may be waived of an oral interview.  Considerations for this group of applicants will be based on documents provided.

Educational System

  • Credit system consisting of two 15 week semesters per academic year.  There may be one 8 week summer semester.  Students must obtain the minimum of 80% attendance for every semeste
  • Coursework

Length of Stydy

Track 1(1.1) and Track 2(2.1):- 3 Years/ 6 semester. Students are allowed a maximum of 6 years to complete th Program.

Track 2(2.2):- 4 years/ 8 semesters. Students are allowed a maximum of 8 years to complete the program.

Curriculum

Program plan The total credits for Track 1(1.1),  Track 2(2.1) and Track 2(2.2) are 48, 57 and 72 credits respectively.

    1. Track 1(1.1): Total credits for Ph.D. program are 48 credits. Students are required to submit a dissertation for graduation. The disertation must reflect an extensive and thorough research on the topic specified and be exceptional in quality.
    2. Track 2(2.1): Total credits for the Ph.D. program are 57 credits, including 6 credits for core courses, 6 credits for research methodology courses, 3 credits for seminar courses, 6 credits for an elective/ directed studies course and 36 credits for dissertation.
    3. Track 2(2.2): Total credits for the Ph.D. program are 72 credits, including 6 credits for core courses, 6 credits for research methodology courses, 3 credits for seminar courses, 9 credits for elective/ directed studies courses and 48 credits for dissertation.

N.B. Any students of Track 2(2.2) who fail to meet the Ph.D. program graduation requirements may be granted an M.A. in Language and Communication on the condition that the student must have completed 6 credits of core courses, 6 credits of research methodology courses, 3 credits of seminar courses, 18 credits of elective/directed studies courses and 3 credits of independent study. The student must pass Comprehensive Examination.
